2 years ago (R)...me, no anti-histamines (minimal except at bedtime), just dietary restrictions....severe....no meat, not much. But no inflammation to speak of.
August 2014....3 months on Rx Antihistamine, lots of chewable Beny (by the case!!) and Gastrocrom. When I saw this picture...all I saw was inflammation and 5 lbs. I could live with the 5 lb if I was indulging....but I wasn't.
After reading Yasmina's post on antihistamines causing the same affect on the brain as cocaine...well, I was forced to reconsider the pros and cons. Not only that but the Gastrocrom made me feel GROSS. I couldn't really put my finger on it...I just felt YUCK! I gave Gastrocrom 5 months and then told my doc it just wasn't worth it....besides, I was seeing improvement following the recommendations by Yasmina, The Low Histamine Chef, eating an Anti diet.
I increased my daily consumption of Anti foods and gradually was able to add in Histamine foods. I was also taking a few supplements to help reduce inflammation if I did eat a Histamine food and had some hacking. But generally I have been able to keep my Histamine Bucket low.
My gradual increase of Histamine foods includes Chick Peas, Avocado and MEAT! I continue to freeze my leftover meat after I've cooked a roast or chicken.....not freezing does allow it to grow bacteria which creates Histamines. So, I freeze it in small 1 serving bags and then can defrost as needed. I also continue to cook a frozen roast or chicken....I'm still cautious about it sitting and creating more Histamines as it thaws.
I'm now counting Carbs/Net Carbs since "eating" again has added 10 pounds I don't like or feel comfortable with. I'm also hoping it helps alleviate any extra inflammation that might be hiding. My consumption of high carb veggies was piling on....a carb is a carb no matter and my body stopped burning fat and was producing insulin to combat the sugars....carbs convert to sugar that converts to fat. Not to mention the addition of the Rx and Beny were piling on pounds. I've been between a rock and a hard place most of the time....but finally feeling hopeful!
It was after I began to drink Bullet Proof coffee that my gut jumped that last healing hurdle; I could breathe freely again (caffeine has Theophylline which has been made into a Rx to aid in asthma treatments) and I could eat meat again!!! Yes, the extra consumption of healthy fats; MCT (simply liquid coconut oil), Ghee and Collagen Protein gave me that last boost I needed to heal....and it was so quick after all the other healing...it only took about a week and meats were acceptable again!!! I was thrilled with being able to consume the Collagen!!! The Weston A Price Foundation has done a ton of research on the healing benefits of healthy fats.....you can research it for yourself. I realize that for some Caffeine can be a mast cell issue...for me it has been more of a pro then a con.....in fact I've seen no side affects from consuming a very strong brew. I make it in the french press, brewing for about 4-5 minutes and then blast it in the Vitamix with Ghee (usually 2-4 Tbsp daily), MCL (watch this stuff it cause cause you to need the bathroom urgently! I only use 1 Tbsp daily) and Collagen (usually 2-4 Tbsp daily).
With my breathing improved HUGELY...which is our goal (cause my MCAD reactions are to NOT breathe and go into anaphylactic shock), I felt safe to reduce the antihistamines. I've been off of chewable Benadryl for about 3-4 months....I was using sometimes 6 boxes a WEEK!!! Holy Cow!!! And I'm weaning off the Rx Hydroxyzine. Last night I was able to sleep a full night without it....and will begin adding some Valerian Root Tea/Holy Basil Tea (I brew my own from loose herbs) at bedtime to see if it will help....but with the histamine loads down, then sleep should come. Histamine keeps you awake and alert, causing insomnia...that's why an Anti-histamine puts you to sleep! Get it!!!
I began experimenting with supplements. Yasmina has mentioned that she can take Vit C and Quercitin/Bromelain to quiet a reaction. So, I added the Bromelain to help reduce the pain in my back around my sciatic nerve....and what I found has been miraculous!!! Just Miraculous!!!! Since you usually find Bromelain (Pineapple enzyme) and Quercitin packaged together....there I was popping the Bromelain for my back pain....when I realized the improvement with eating histamine foods.
If I begin to hack after I've eaten a histamine food, I will pop 2,000 Vit C, 2,000 Bromelain/Quercitin. It stops IMMEDIATELY!!!!!! I mean, instantly!!! On most occasions I can now eat just about anything healthy within reason and I have no reaction....and that means I've been able to eat out at a healthy restaurant and not have any reaction. Instead of fretting about needing Beny and falling asleep, I can now pop my supplements and carry on!!!! Then I was reading some of the testimonials on Amazon for Solaray QBC Plex Quercetin, Bromelain...and I was floored!!! Yes, I too have found great results from inflammatory reactions!!!
Of course this is only my experience (I am NOT a doctor) because I've found with each of us Mast Cell folks it's always different. For some it's Eczema, for others it's the cessation of breathing! But for all of us, it's healing the gut and making peace with food. Living without fear of eating. Finding that peace that brings the remaining 50% of healing.
Yes, I do believe we can heal from MCAD...just as I healed from Lyme Disease. It's one step, one day, one week, one month, one year AT. A. TIME. The gut is key to any healing. Unfortunately Rx have side affects and sometimes cause more distress then they are worth. They did for me.....although finding the Hydroxyzine brought me free breathing when my breaths were anything but. For that I'm grateful until I could regain my health completely......
Do I really believe it's complete? In a way, yes. Finding the key is always vital to anything. I do believe we can heal from the maladies of this life. Absolutely!!!
